Western Samoa and Sinelei Reef Resort,
part II
What truly makes this place special, though, are the people. Their genuine concern was evident in dozens of little ways. I feel very fortunate to have experienced a bit of fa'a Samoa -- the way of the Samoan people. I do not think anyone who ventures to this South Pacific island will be disappointed.
Background
Part of the magic of Sinalei Reef Resort stems from its history. Once a
site where the great warriors of old would feast themselves and rejuvenate
their energy prior to war, Sinalei offers the same restorative properties
now. Its beauty... its spirit... its peace... comes not just from its spectacular
location overlooking an azure lagoon, but from an energy that's inherent
to the area.
That pride and respect of the area's history can
be recognized in the design of Sinalei. The resort's main entrance, restaurant,
and bar, with their domed ceilings are built in the Samoan ways of old.
The afa, or knotted workmanship of the ribbed ceilings bound to pillar
uprights, is a craft seldom practiced today. Set in a landscaped paradise
of coconut palms, bougainvillea,
scented frangipani and exotic orchids, each fale or independent villa
has its own balcony with garden or sea views.
Relax in the open-walled fine restaurant, pool-side bar, or browse in the
gift shop. Enjoy hours of pleasure swimming or snorkelling in clear waters
of the lagoon, or lying with a book in the shade of a coconut palm on the
white sand beach.
Here's where you'll find a welcome in true fa'a Samoa . The friendly
staff are the decendants of the warriors of old, and it would be their delight
to welcome you to Sinalei.
