ARRIVAL:
Santiago is in the middle of this incredibly long, thin country.
Lan Airlines (formerly Lan Chile) is the national airline and offers
flights throughout Chile. There are flights to Santiago on American,
United, and COPA (a Continental partner). It is possible to take
a bus from the airport to the city for a little less than $10. A
cab may be $25 or more, depending on negotiation skills.

MONEY MATTERS:
The Chilean peso fluctuates, and currently is approximately 415 to the
dollar. Cash gets a better rate than traveler's checks, but both can
be changed at a cambio. There is even an ATM machine in the Santiago
airport accepting bank cards.

GETTING AROUND:
A bewildering array of buses, from luxurious overnighters with reclining
seats to local vehicles packed with people and produce, travel the most
popular routes but a car will be necessary for extensive sightseeing.
Outside of Santiago traffic is not a problem, nor is theft or safety.

CLIMATE:
With a length of 2700 miles from north to south and the Andes running
almost the entire length, Chile encompasses everything from arid desert
in the north, to a lush Lake Distric, to the cold, windy mountains of
Patagonia in the south. Lake District weather in November was warm days
and cool evenings.
